From crisis to composting, Rupsanatan Purkait’s journey

Rupsanatan Purkait is a successful organic farmer at Paschim Jata and is from Raidighi. Agriculture is the main source of his income. He used to cultivate vegetables using fertilizers, but eventually, his production started to decrease. He faced a severe financial crisis and joined the Mukti Agriculture Department — SAM (Sustainable Agricultural Movement) and received Skill Development training on organic farming.

He started his vermicomposting unit after training with Mukti SAM. The results were mind blowing. He was successful in making 1000 kgs of organic fertilizer.

Today, with this technological setup, he is producing his own organic fertilizer, vermicomposting, and experiencing increased demand from fellow farmers. He is encouraging other farmers in his region to make their own compost.

Prateek Bajaj’s vermicomposting success

At the young age of 21, Prateek Bajaj came up with the idea of vermicomposting as a profession. His inspiration was from attending a training session in dairying at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, IVRI Izatnagar, in 2015. His love for nature and soil drove an entrepreneurial spirit. He became successful in producing vermicompost. He not only produced enough vermicomposting for his agricultural needs but also sold it to other cities like Uttarakhand.

In his journey, he also inspired other women like Mrs. Pramila from Khargaina to take up vermicompost as a commercial venture.

A 72 year man makes 100kgs of compost at home

Rajinder Singh is from Ludhiana and is an inspiration to everyone around. He started terrace gardening after he retired. Initially, most of his garden got spoiled and his children

decided to call an expert to fix it. After learning about the cost Rajinder decided to read about different plants. Now he has more than 500 plants including seasonal fruits and vegetables. No wet or organic waste is taken out without using it completely to make manure. He generates 100kgs of compost at home.

MJR Pearl Apartments knows the worth of waste

MJR Pearl apartment located in Kadugodi, Bangalore, was established in 2017 and it is spread across 5 acres of land and has 413 units. The people living in the apartment took an eco-friendly step to turn 200kgs of garbage into 2 tons of waste every month.

This is a remarkable initiative that can inspire all other apartments in capacity to turn their waste into compost. So, how did they make this possible?

They took help from a resident community composting expert and with solidarity they could turn waste into gold.

Nurturing them young with a composting program

Matunuck School took a great initiative to reduce lunchroom wastage and enlighten the children about the importance of safeguarding the planet with eco-friendly ways of disposal.

This initiative was led by the fourth-grade class which reduced the waste from the lunchroom to landfills to nearly half. The children were educated about sorting waste into composting, recycling, and landfill bins.

With the help of this program, they were able to produce over 1,500 pounds of compost and recycled hundreds of pounds of materials.

Remarkable waste management model in Goa

A landfill turned into a remarkable waste management facility, led by a brilliant woman in partnership with the state. The plant processes about 250 tonnes of waste on a daily basis by converting organic waste into biogas and electricity. This facility has significantly reduced waste in the state.

This success was achieved with the help of a strong government, awareness among people, and an effective waste management system.
