Unfortunately, We Can’t Buy Our Way Out of Climate Change

Selling sustainable products is often just another form of greenwashing

No matter where you go to shop nowadays, you will undoubtedly notice that claims of sustainability jump out of every product possible.

From vegan versions of various food products to ‘sustainably sourced’ items, ‘eco-friendly’ products are being pushed to customers in every way possible (there is even ‘sustainable petrol’ that emits less greenhouse gases when burnt).

Although this might be a good thing in an ideal world where this is done because everyone (from corporate leaders to consumers) truly cares about the world, the reality is that selling sustainable products is just another way for companies to continue generating increasing sales and profits.

All while the consumer can consume without feeling the guilt that comes with the pollution normal consumption causes.

Sustainability Sells

Now, you might doubt the efficacy of labeling something with “green product”.

After all, a simple label can’t make much difference right…?

Well, according to the World Wildlife Fund, there has been an increase of 71% in searches for sustainable goods…
