We usually try to last as long as possible without putting the heating on at the start of winter. The idea is that we are saving the environment as well as reducing our heating bills. We try to wait until the deep chill sets in.

Usually, by late October or early November, our resolve has broken. Our fingers and toes are frosty and blue, and we need some warmth to stop them dropping off!

The heating goes on for just for half an hour. I might stand by the radiator while it’s on to warm my fingers up. I’ll cup my hands around a hot coffee, or have a hot water bottle on my lap. We still try not to use more energy than we need. We wear three layers of clothing and have blankets on our knees while we watch TV. We are doing our best to not waste fuel.

This year, the weather has been so mild, we didn’t feel the need to put the heating on until today. It’s been remarkably warm for the time of year. Some days, it’s been warmer outside than inside. I only started wearing a coat when I went outside about a week ago.

They say October 2024 was the warmest October on record. That’s climate change for you. It’s alarming. It worries me that the pace of global warming is hastening. The forecasts are bad.
