Words Matter When You Are Fighting The Global Climate Catastrophe
Words matter.
Often, we use words that politicians can weaponize for their agendas.
We should stop calling the climate breakdown “global warming” or “global heating” because it is a phenomenon that causes climate breakdown.
Given the scale of the problem, weird weather patterns don’t just cause things like droughts and heatwaves. They also cause cold snaps.
Politicians like Trump already use cold snaps from the Arctic to argue that the world is cooling down — but it’s not.
This also gives people language to argue against scientific facts.
In a world that has become increasingly polarized, with attention spans shorter than that of a goldfish, people easily forget.
When they experience a cold winter in New York, they fail to remember that just last year, smoke covered the skies due to wildfires caused by accelerated climate change.
We need to be extremely careful with the words we use.
They can easily be twisted.
The best way to address the climate crisis might be to use terms like “global climate catastrophe,” “global climate crisis,” or “global climate breakdown.”
