Origin of Video gaming competition

Many of us feel that these video gaming competitions are a recent phenomenon, but it has a long history. The fact is that a large section of people was unaware of these gaming competitions.

Its roots can be traced back to the 1970s and are now growing rapidly. These video games are now carving out their market within that. According to data from Newzoo, revenues from the gaming competition are going to reach $1.6bn by 2023; it was just $776mn in 2018. Esports has a vast viewership of around 495mn and is expected to reach 646 million viewers by 2023.

One of the oldest video games includes Tennis For Two from the ’50s and Pong from the early ’70s. Atari’s Space Invaders tournament in 1980 was one of the broadest competitive gaming events, where players tried to obtain the highest score.

Before that, Stanford University held a much smaller tournament. The major tournaments include the first major Street Fighter tournament. It was Titled ‘Battle by the Bay, and this was a 40-person annual competition that continues to this day.

Then, in 1997, Quake’s Red Annihilation US tournament had happened with the participation of over 2,000 entrants. Dennis “Thresh” Fong had won the competition and was hence awarded. The developer John Carmack’s Ferrari Quake 3 Arena was later launched, specifically designed for multiplayer combat.

The Esports boom years

It was the time of the 2000s when games like StarCraft and Counter-Strike gained popularity. The main reason behind this was the rise of broadband internet, amazing video content, and the newly emerging online services, which allowed more and more gamers to play with each other online and stay more connected.

Some of the widely popular Esports teams include Optic Gaming and TSM, founded in the 2000s. All the widely popular Tournament providers such as ESL and Dreamhack have increased tremendously. As ESports was continuously growing, prize pools rose, and the standard of play and the general infrastructure also grew rapidly.

Reach of gaming competitions

The Esports industry has just boomed over the years in all sectors, including viewership and revenue. The continuously growing viewership has contributed to the revenue growth, and the main reason is the viewers who are generating revenue.

As we can see the growing potential of reaching a large audience, more and more brands are showing their interest in Esports, which has contributed rapidly and has been a significant source of income.

As COVID-19 had arrived in 2020, the overall prize money had tremendously fallen to $119,457,478 from just a limited number of tournaments. The mean championship prize pool was $26,687. This clearly shows the adverse impact on this sector and shows a significant dip in each player’s mean earnings and median earning.
