Easy-to-use NKRO and other configurator updates

This week we’ve added three small, fun updates to the configurator:

Easy N-Key Rollover

With this feature (also known as NKRO) enabled, you can press ten keys at once, and the keyboard would actually send ten keystrokes. By default, most USB keyboards only support six-key rollover, so you’d be losing four out of those ten keys.

It sounds a little crazy — why would you want to mash ten keys at once? This is actually important if you’re using your ErgoDox EZ for stenography with Plover, or if you’re a gamer.

We’ve had NKRO support baked into our firmware before, but it is now easier than ever to activate. Simply click a blank key anywhere in your layout (any layer) and assign it the “NKRO” keycode. This key will now toggle NKRO on or off on your keyboard. Doesn’t get much simpler than that!

Extended One Shot Mods

One-shot modifier keys work a little different than regular modifiers, in that you don’t have to hold them down. You just tap one-shot Ctrl (for example), and then tap S, and you end up inputting Ctrl+S.

Just like NKRO, we’ve been supporting these for a while. What’s new is that you can now send both Hyper (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Win/Cmd) and Meh (its less “hyper” cousin, Ctrl+Alt+Shift) as one-shot keys. This makes system-wide shortcuts that much easier to use!

Ctrl+Alt Dual Function Key

Our final little feature in today’s roundup is the Ctrl+Alt dual function key. This is as simple as it sounds: You can now have a key that sends Ctrl+Alt when held down, and any other printable character when it’s tapped.
