As the Russian invasion of Ukraine drags into its third year, the daily realities of the front lines often get obscured amidst a fog of competing narratives, propaganda, and high-level strategic analyses. To truly understand the critical importance of this moment in history, we must look beyond the flow of battle lines on a map and more to the profound human costs of the conflict. Despite the absence of dramatic breakthroughs or sweeping offensives in recent months, the fighting remains intense, and devastating, with an appalling toll in lives on both sides as the war has settled into a grueling battle of attrition.

The staggering casualties suffered by both armies in just the two week period from March 14–28, 2024 illustrate the unrelenting lethality of this “frozen conflict” for those on the ground. According to official Ukrainian Ministry of Defense figures, Russian forces suffered 11,770 total casualties over those 14 days, including soldiers killed, wounded, and missing in action. Even if we discount this number by a full third to account for potential overclaiming, that still amounts to 7,886 Russian troops permanently taken off the battlefield – an average of 564 men per day, or a rate of attrition that would equate to nearly 100,000 losses over six months.
