On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was seriously wounded in a shooting incident that took place following a cabinet meeting, as reported by the TASR news agency. Local media outlets provided further details, stating that four shots were fired during the attack, with one bullet striking the prime minister in the abdomen. Fico was swiftly transported to a hospital for emergency medical treatment, where he is currently in a critical condition and fighting for his life, according to a statement released on his official Facebook account.

Lubos Blaha, the deputy speaker of the Slovak parliament, confirmed the news of the shooting and Fico’s injuries to TASR. An eyewitness account provided to the press described hearing multiple gunshots and witnessing a man being apprehended by police at the scene. The shooting incident occurred outside a community cultural center in the town of Handlova, located approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) northeast of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, where a cabinet meeting was being held.
