GET YER GODDAMN YA-YA’S OUT!

On the cusp of this fine Friday I want to talk about behaving badly and irresponsibly — but with purpose.

Everyone’s bad behavior looks different because we’re all suffering at the hands of different childhood, societal, and odd personal wirings that render us feeling very very guilty when we do | consume certain things.

Fast food. Sex. Drugs. Drinking. Nail biting. Watching reality TV. Talking to that person who broke your goddamn heart and they’re bad for you.

Now. Some of these things are actually dangerous and self harming or full blown addictions and I am not encouraging your participation in them, full fucking stop, BUT, there is something to be said for the good old fashioned hot steam kettle-scream.

I went out drinking and dancing twice this week — once to a “‘90s in the front, ‘80’s in the back” party that we keep saying “is just like Kelley,” and the other to a lightly kinky, bring-your-vinyl-mini-skirt situation—and while both rendered me hungover and exhausted, I also know they were important.

I needed to banish the glowing white screens that dominate my days and feel my body move in space. I needed to feel my hair grow sticky against my neck and face, feel my hips twitch and swing and my throat grow raw as I sang along.

I needed to feel alive, a little naked, a little on edge, a little messy; these are things that feel like freedom to me.

And while a leather Matrix party on a Wednesday night isn’t “responsible,” it’s a form of self-care for me.

So I say unto you; know your church and worship in it just the way you need to.

Trump’s Weaponized Base Is Going After Academics — I Know Because I Was Targeted

By Kevin Allred

Trump’s emboldened base, en masse, has been attacking leftist educators with renewed vigor since his election, and universities across the country have wasted no time caving to alt-right (read: white supremacist) pressure to discipline professors, freedom of speech/academic freedom be damned.

In a peculiar twist of logic, members of the alt-right have positioned themselves as victims of discrimination, and as such, have demanded that universities take action to “protect” them.

Sadly, many are.

On Transgender People And ‘Biological Sex’ Myths

By Julia Serrano

Before I begin, I should mention that I am writing this piece, not only as a trans woman and feminist, but also as a biologist.

While there are a number of sexually dimorphic traits — such as chromosomes, gonads, external genitals, other reproductive organs, ratio of sex hormones, and secondary sex characteristics — many times these traits do not all align (i.e., all male, or all female) within the same person, as is the case for intersex and many transgenderpeople.

This is not merely a “trans perspective” on the matter; here is an article from Nature (one of the most respected science journals) arguing that, “The idea of two sexes is simplistic. Biologists now think there is a wider spectrum than that.”

It’s Time For A Sexist-ectomy In Hospitals

By Gretchen Gales

Throughout the visit I was asked — again and again — about potential pregnancy for the CT scan, badgered about STDS, and of course if I was on my period. The staff assured me it was just because of my age group, so they had to ask. (An estimated 10 times.)

The only one who didn’t ask me was the doctor himself after bothering to look at the CT scan and finally confirming I had, in fact, had a kidney stone (and more where that came from sitting peacefully in each kidney).

It took six hours in the ER to do something my regular physician suspected in the first hour I stepped foot into the hospital.

The ACA Has Been A Lifesaver For Those With Eating Disorders — What Happens If It Goes Away?

By Hanna Brooks Olsen

In a letter to then-Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, an organization of “more than 35 organizations in the eating disorders education, prevention, and treatment communities” stated their case:

“People with eating disorders experience discrimination in accessing proper treatment and this is a serious obstacle to recovery…According to a 2003 epidemiological study of more than 2000 women, only 1 in 4 white women and 1 in 20 black women who had a diagnosable eating disorder ever received any treatment for their eating disorder.”

Protecting benefits and Medicaid coverage is a matter of social justice. A lack of treatment options and funding methods means that the lethality of eating disorders can be extremely discriminating; if only one in 20 Black women receives treatment, the other 19 are at a much higher risk of death.

Why Are Tumblr, Twitter, And YouTube Blocking LGBTQ+ Content?

By Jay Castello

For years, and across many of the most prominent social-media platforms, LGBTQ+ content has been categorized as NSFW. Back in March, YouTube creators found that LGBTQ+ adjacent videos they had created were being hidden from viewers via the company’s own safety option, called “Restricted Mode.”

This included coming-out stories, educational content, and even this video titled “GAY flag and me petting my cat to see if youtube blocks this.”

Let’s partner, shall we?
