The Ineffable Magick of Community

Join the Establishment community and fight the good fight!

This coming Tuesday The Establishment enters the fray of DEMO day; it’s the culminating day of the accelerator we’ve been wending our way through for the past 20 weeks.

But in many ways, it’s the culmination of two and a half years of work; together we’ve fought to get stories into the world that mainstream media has chosen again and again — and again — to ignore or silence.

And now the time has to come to see if we can truly make The Establishment a thriving business. In front of hundreds of investors, media partners, and general Interweb movers and shakers, we’ll take the stage and be given 6 minutes to pitch the ineffable magick that you’ve helped us build….

but I could talk for 6 hours about The Establishment, 6 days even.

We’re nothing without our community; the web we’ve woven — writers, readers, academics, allies, activists, and agitators — would dazzle any arachnid with its strength and intricacy.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

And wish us luck.

With love + rage,

Can You Make Donald Trump Resign From Your Nightmares?

By Rachel McCarthy James

Politicians making appearances in dreams is, of course, nothing new. In an interview with The Daily Beast, dream researcher Kelly Bulkeley reported an uptick in dreams about politicians like Ross Perot, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton during their respective runs for office, calling their dream appearances “metaphors for a feeling or a relationship in your life.”

But Trump dreams seem to be particularly common, and chilling; people have documented Trump torturing them in front of a group of white people, stiffing them on a date, and chasing them through a Walmart in their nightmares.

Why Do Teen Magazines Idealize Relationships Between Underage Girls And Adult Men?

By Erika W. Smith

In 2015, Seventeen published an article called “8 signs Kylie Jenner and Tyga are totally dating.” The article documented the evidence — paparazzi photos of the pair holding hands, social media pics with romantic messages — but failed to mention the reason why the pair had not yet gone public: Jenner was 17 and under the age of consent, and Tyga was 25.

And their relationship may have been romantic even earlier: They’d been publicly spending time together for years, since Jenner was 14 and Tyga was 21.

With FREE SPEECH Act, Trump Fights Hostile Press To Make America Great!

By Andrea Grimes

Before the Free Speech Act a troubling time for the president, and he knew the American people deserved better than to witness these partisan attacks on his administration while at the same time seeing disturbing sports broadcasts showing kneeling football players disrespecting the brave American armed forces and the gorgeous American flag, attempting to hide under the cover of unsubstantiated claims about so-called “racism,” an awful scourge that our great Republican president Abraham Lincoln expunged from America more than 150 years ago.

Our Usernames, Ourselves: How Anonymity Shaped The Internet (And Me)

By Katie Fustich

The internet was once a gaping void — meaningless, malleable lines of rudimentary code filled with unexplored potential. These liminal spaces between these HTML strokes were once so far removed from real life, it was as though anything said or done on the internet existed on another plane entirely. It was a veritable tabula rasa for one’s entire being; a chance to start afresh without packing up, moving to Wisconsin, and starting a free-form jazz sextet.

However, as our virtual personae gave way to the real/virtual hybrid creatures we now know as humans, one significant artifact of the early internet was seemingly lost forever: the username.

We Warned You About Milo And You’re Still Not Listening

By Katherine Cross

In the wake of Joseph Bernstein’s 9,000-word Buzzfeed report on the newly-revealed private emails of one-time Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos, it’s instructive to remember that the right wing forces who exploited GamerGate’s vitriolic attacks on feminists, queer people, and anyone deemed “PC” in videogames were ruthless in applying those tactics elsewhere, all the way up the ladders of Western politics.

But amid all the caterwauling from folks in the media about how “we should’ve paid attention to GamerGate,” it not only stings deeply (I and many other people, mostly women and queer people, were warning everyone about this for years, from every rostrum we could find), it also ignores a deeper history that men like Yiannopoulos exploited.
