WWhen someone experiences a pregnancy loss, whether it’s a miscarriage or stillbirth, it can be difficult to figure out what the right thing to say might be. For one, grief and loss understandably make many people uncomfortable, and they either trip over themselves trying to express something supportive, or say nothing at all for fear of saying the wrong thing. We also live in a society that doesn’t provide much space to talk about loss, especially pregnancy loss. So what’s a caring friend to do?

Enter clinical psychologist Dr. Jessica Zucker, who specializes in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health. After working with many women who have experienced pregnancy loss, and having a miscarriage of her own at 16 weeks, Dr. Zucker has a pretty good handle on what people in this situation might want to hear from friends and loved ones.
