The Trump Administration cannot take away your rights or our fight to protect them.

Over the past two days, sources from inside the Trump administration have confirmed that the administration plans to rescind the Obama administration’s guidance to schools about how to protect transgender students under Title IX — the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in educational institutions.

The Obama Department of Education and Department of Justice issued an extensive guidance document in May after years of investigation into the best ways to protect transgender students from discrimination. The reversal of course by the Trump administration should put to bed any notion that this administration will protect the LGBTQ community. And of course, the extensive targeting of immigrant, Black, indigenous, and Muslim communities already undermines the most basic notions of decency and justice. The administration’s latest attack — this time on trans youth — is yet another cruel and mean-spirited measure that does nothing but encourage discrimination and diminish hope for already vulnerable individuals and their families.

The reversal of course by the Trump administration should put to bed any notion that this administration will protect the LGBTQ community.

Through this action, the federal government will undoubtedly increase government and private discrimination against transgender individuals. Given that it also reinforces the idea that transgender people are not deserving of legal protection — undermining the very core of our humanity — today’s action will likely increase individually-perpetrated violence against transgender people as well.

But no matter how hard they try, the Trump administration alone cannot undo federal law. This means that Title IX’s protections remain in place and we will keep fighting in court to ensure that transgender students are protected across the country. Action rescinding the guidance does not moot the case of Gavin Grimm now pending before the Supreme Court, but only highlights how important it is. In Gavin’s case, the Court will be deciding the scope of protections for transgender individuals under federal law. For anyone concerned about actions rescinding the guidance, this case is the answer. We will fight for Gavin and all other students across the country to ensure that no student is expelled from public space because of who they are.

And to the trans students and their families who are scared about what the future holds, please know that you are perfect and beautiful just as you are. Your existence does not threaten the rights of others but rather makes the world more beautiful. Your body does not invade the privacy of others but rather makes the human condition more beautiful. Your future is not limited to the visions of you that these dangerous government officials hold but rather it is held in the legacies of our communities that have always and will continue to fight alongside you for the transformation and possibility that your very existence inspires.

Your existence does not threaten the rights of others but rather makes the world more beautiful.

As a trans person who has fought many demons to fight beside you today, I will never give up this fight. We have existed through time and persisted through time. Look to your elders and they will look to you. Our future is bright even when they try to shut down the dreams that sustain us.
