What Columbus Day Is Actually About — In His Own Horrifying Words

By Alli Kirkham

The following post and comic originally appeared on Everyday Feminism, and is reprinted here with permission.

Dominant history is written by the “victors” — so many people in the U.S. think Columbus Day is something to celebrate.

But we need to search no further than Columbus’ own words to find out why this holiday is so disturbing. This comic shows what European colonizers had to say about how colonization works, and it gives us an important perspective on what we really need to know about our nation’s history.

Happy International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People.
