A town hall meeting in Washington D.C. discussing the large number of unsolved missing teenager cases of minority children last week was a trending topic of social media because of the notable absence of white people. Photos of the event circulated on social media showed a packed room, but few, if any, white people could be seen leading to a backlash on Twitter to reiterate the sentiment that they only show up to events that directly affect them.

According to the Huffington Post: Latino Voices article, white feminists, in particular, have be subject to criticism over not participating in protests or rallies pertaining to women of color. This point was raised after the Women’s March on Washington last month. Residential segregation was also mentioned as a potential reason for the lack of diversity at the meeting. Today, Washington D.C. is one of the most segregated cities in the U.S.
