A local prankster put up a sign mocking Malibu’s recent decision to identify as a sanctuary city on Friday just outside the city limits. This means that they would now have policies in place designed to limit cooperation with or involvement in federal immigration enforcement actions. Cities, counties and some states have a range of informal policies as well as actual laws that qualify as “sanctuary” positions, according to Huffington Post: Latino Voices.

The very official-looking sign read: “Cheap nannies and gardeners make Malibu great! (Boyle Heights not so much).” The joke lies in the fact that while the city of Malibu is predominantly comprised of wealthy white residents, a large number of Latinos travel from all over Los Angeles county to work in a variety of domestic or other labor positions. The signs were promptly removed and an investigation is underway.
