Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is bridging a crumbled relationship with the US via Donald Trump, a matter of concern raised by New York Times, Watan reported.

Arab American publication, Watan, published a headline translating “Trump granted Sisi a blank check… Suppress and I’ll back you up.”

President Sisi is notorious for demonstrating totalitarian-like style of ruling Egypt, especially evident in suppressing the public by using force. Since his ascension to power in 2013, the Obama administration limited its relationship with Egypt.

Sisi was the first president to call Trump to congratulate him for taking office, according to Watan.

New York Times’ concern was following the meeting of Trump and Sisi, which the latter was satisfied with. For Egypt, it is essential to reestablish the relationship with the US since Egypt receives financial assistance from the US, according to the Times.

The article also reports quotes from Tom Malinowski, former Deputy Secretary of State in charge of human rights, and Human Rights Watch Director Sarah Margon. Both Margon and Malinowski condemned Trump’s support for Sisi.
