In the world of event management, success often hinges on thinking outside the box and embracing innovative approaches, whether it is closing a client or thinking about creating a disruptive event.

One such approach gaining traction in the industry is inversion thinking. By flipping conventional perspectives and challenging the status quo, event professionals are discovering a powerful tool that can elevate their events to new heights.

We have tried implementing this thought process where we could at TTM and I think it is something that has helped change the way we approach the briefs that we receive and improve on what we can offer clients.

So what is inversion thinking?

In simple terms, we take whatever issue we are presented with and look at it deductively. When we do that, we build a framework within which coming up with innovative answers becomes a lot easier. When I say easier it means that considering all factors involved, what are the few things we can do that helps us cause a certain disruption.

We have used this way of thinking for not only crisis situations but also to enhance attendee experiences, and think of ways that a brand can be presented on ground, as a fair extension to their digital footprint.

How it helps unleash creative potential.

Inversion thinking has helped us with many creative breakthroughs, because once we implement this thought process we are forced to explore unconventional ideas and perspectives. Simple things like a seating plan. For example : We once instead of having a round table set up got rid of all the round tables and instead had small lounges set up around the venues periphery. That enhanced the networking session to become candid enough for deal closing.

This approach encourages innovation, allowing for the generation of unique event concepts, engaging activities, and immersive experiences that captivate attendees.

It helps identify crisis before they happen.

Events inherently come with risks, ranging from logistical challenges to unforeseen circumstances. Inversion thinking plays a vital role in risk management by identifying and addressing potential issues before they arise.

By analyzing what could go wrong, we can proactively develop contingency plans, establish robust security measures, and ensure the smooth running of the event we are doing.

It helps drive innovation and disruption.

In today’s competitive event landscape, standing out is essential for us and for our clients.

This way of thinking provides us with a strategic advantage by driving innovation and differentiation.

We question everything when we speak to clients, whether it is to do with elements they want or guests they want to offer special treatment to which they may think are conventional practices, because by doing so, we get enough insight to offer better more cost effective and creative ideas that help them stand out further.

We have in the past found ways where we have taken conventional practices of clients and have transformed them into unconventional events and have seen audiences who might otherwise be considered super-formal literally dance as a flash mob to energize themselves for a big day of conferencing.

We try to implement this way of thinking as much as possible when working for our corporate clients and it has been only onward and upward. Although, I would advise against unnecessary thinking too. There are certain events that are perfect as they are, one just needs to curate them correctly. As Lao Tzu said,” When you cook a fish and you poke it too often, you end up ruining it”. Don’t use this kind of thinking to try to be too creative, just keep things simple.
