Different Speeds

Everyone’s experienced this: you spend an arduous amount of time composing a single email. You’re nervous. Afraid to hit send. The stakes are high (to you at least). Then you do it. You hit send. And…

A response comes back within a minute. “Sure, sounds good.” And just like that the pressure is released. The fear is gone. It wasn’t a big deal after all. This happens because we live life at different speeds.

Some people need to plan for weeks on an assignment. Others shoot from the hip and get it done that afternoon. Results may vary. But the point is that you may run your business at a speed not aligned with your customer.

The only way to discover the speed is through continuous interaction and feedback. Whether on social, email, phone, or in person. If not, you’re at risk of being forgotten.

Be honest with yourself. There’s something you’re not currently doing with you customers or donors. You know it should happen. You know it would serve them well. It could be sending that scary email to a top client. Or arranging a meetup. This week go and execute on what should be done. You may find there was nothing to be afraid of after all.
