Do you need the sponsorship?

I’ve seen the podcast ad world expand rapidly over this year. Brands have started to recognize the value in podcast ads. Anchor just released a portal to offer sponsors to their users. It’s wonderful to see small content machines able to support themselves. However, this enticing land grab for sponsors brings out the greedy side of people and it may hurt their business.

If you have a podcast. Ask yourself if you really need the money? No one likes ads. Think about the audience you’ve been slowly building. They care about you, about your story and your work. They don’t care for the ad. Even if you’re reading the ad copy.

Noah Kagan’s Podcast is a great example of this. He has a sizable following of people who respect his message and company. He could’ve easily setup a sponsorship deal but chose not to. It’s a minor detail but makes his episodes clean, quick and entertaining. When I play an episode I don’t have to have my finger hover over the ⏩ button. It makes his content easier to consume.

The less roadblocks in your content delivery (from pre-roll ads to email pop ups) the more people will stay and enjoy it. It’s that simple.

Follow for free, no ads, ever.👇
