I was in Snoqualmie today and visited some of the spots where they filmed the cult classic series Twin Peaks. There were fans looking around for any evidence. A plaque, poster, gift shop crap. But thankfully there was nothing. And that’s what makes the area enjoyable for fans. It’s still authentic.

The show is based in the eerie Pacific Northwest. It explores strange paranormal themes and leans heavy on the unknown Lovecraftian horror that lurks in the wilderness. If the town made itself into a caricature of the show it would be awful.

There are plenty of companies that have exploited the best parts of their industry. When something feels fake and inauthentic it’s because it’s dishonest. Companies put up tacky and loud exaggerations in hope of luring people in, like a Venus flytrap. But it doesn’t last. Keeping it genuine will retain the true customers. Kitschy ages like vinegar.
