Reflections on the Japan Foundation Sydney exhibition in collaboration with Sydney Design Festival and Art Month

I dropped into the Japan Foundation with a friend to fill in some time before a dinner reservation and didn’t know what was on, but was greeted with FEMUFACUTRE.

Come into this with an open mind and an expectation for some heavy experiments in design. FEMUFACTURE “brings together japanese and Australian artists who work in the hybrid space between traditional crafting techniques and contemporary digital fabrication technologies” — this is actually a super on point summary of the entire show.

Although I didn’t look at the pieces in this order, I’m going to follow the numerical order of the pieces and give some quick thoughts on each of them. There weren’t too many in the collection, so this will be a brief blog.

2) I Wear the Dog’s Hair, and the Dog Wears My Hair, Aki Inomata
This 5ish minute long video was everything you expect from “weird Japan” — a woman collects her dog’s hair and weaves it into a nicely structured but gross looking textured cape and then uses her own hair to make a (for lack of a better word) hairpiece for her dog.
