Today I’m going to look at some of my favorite places on Lake Constance, the area I currently live in.

Constance

Constance is one of my favorite cities in Germany. Perhaps because it is the largest city located on the beautiful Lake Constance, because of its long history or maybe just because it offers so much to see and do, it is just amazing.

Originally settled by Celts and then Romans, Constance has been a center of culture and commerce for a very long time. For over 1200 years it was also the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese and the location of the only Papal election held north of the Alps.

One of my favorite spots is Mainau Island, a botanic paradise not too far from the city center. You can take a ferry there from Constance or walk the 2 miles or so. The island is quite large and there are many exhibits to see. You can also stop for a coffee or some lunch and enjoy this beautiful location.

Much of the medieval part of the town is still standing so you can meander through narrow passageways and alleys, where you will often come upon unique shops, cafés and restaurants.

Whatever you are interested in, you are bound to find something to do in Constance. Even if that just means strolling along the lake and watching life go by.
