Dear Gentle Reader,

After binge-watching Queen Charlotte, a Bridgerton Story, I am sharing my thoughts about her move from Mirow, Germany, to London, England and her life. The latest addition to the Bridgerton series intrigues me because I see the story through the lens of an expat.

As someone who has moved nine times from one country to another, a crucial part of Queen Charlotte resonated with me. Let me explain. Well, expats come in many forms; in her case, she was a “betrothed” expat. Her marriage was arranged between two kingdoms, so she had to move from her home country to another.

It was the norm of that period in time. However, we still have arranged marriages in our society, and in some cases, it still requires a move from one country to another by either party.

We also have love marriages where one of the marrying parties has to move from their country to another for the marriage. The persons in these love marriages are affectionately referred to as “lovepat.”

A fuller definition — individuals move abroad because of a romantic relationship. They may have met their partner because of their travels, already living…
