I’ve never been one to spend a good deal of time looking backwards, more interested in thinking about the future and what it might hold.

That being said, I’ve been noticing myself looking backwards a lot lately when it comes to my online routines.

Social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram are only appealing to me because of what they once were, feeling much less fun, interesting, and enjoyable than they used to be.

So whenever I find myself thinking about “the good old days”, I feel like it’s important to understand exactly what’s changed.

‘Internet Friends’ is a new podcast that exists to examine that exact question in detail.

My co-host is Jon Mitchell, someone I met on Twitter when meeting people on the service felt like the most natural thing in the world.

In our first episode we look back on our own stories to find out why the internet became such an important place to us, then we examine why we don’t feel quite as ‘at home’ online as we once did.

It quickly becomes clear that the internet of today is a very different place than it was only five years ago, and I think that’s worth talking about.

I also think the feeling of lost-ness might resonate with a lot of people, and if it resonates with you at all then give this episode a listen.

We’ll be publishing Episode 2 this coming Wednesday, and then starting a bi-weekly schedule from there. Listen online, in Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, or your app of choice.
