Why Are So Many People Buying Fake PhDs?

How well do you trust your doctor?

Not-so-fun fact: to get a diploma, you just need some fancy paper, a printer, and an embossed seal. Costs you about $30 from Michaels. Photo by Brett Andrei Martin.

Even though I know it comes off as bragging, I want to state that I worked really, really hard for my PhD.

I got through it fairly easily, in fact, compared to some of my colleagues. I finished in about 4.5 years, due in part to working on a thesis focused around computers (which meant that I never ran out of reagents or had to wait for my organisms to grow). I also got along well with my advisor and my thesis committee, which meant that I avoided some of the long, protracted battles that sometimes spring up between a student and their committee.

Throughout my PhD, I was paid a stipend for the work I did, or in exchange for teaching classes. Overall, I made around $25k per year. In comparison to what an average biology major makes out of school (around $65k per year), I lost out on a potential $180k of earnings.

But what if I could have gotten my PhD for just a few thousand dollars in an online transaction — instantly?

Personally, I probably would not have been better off. Earning an advanced degree isn’t about getting the piece of paper or the title — it’s about the knowledge that you gather, about your deeper understanding of your subject area.
