Grace Kelly. Audrey Hepburn. Marilyn Monroe. Some of the most famous, and timeless fashion icons.

When it comes to fashion, the 1950s will forever be a fantastic source of stylistic inspiration. It blended timeless elegance with the decades’ current trends into the zeitgeist of the retro fashion movement.

One of the things that make 50s fashion so special is the way that it embodies optimism and joie de vivre which feels very refreshing. After the austerity of the 40s, and years of war and rationing, people were ready for a change. the postwar period saw a resurgence of color and vibrancy in all areas of life, including fashion.

The silhouettes of the time reflect this sense of joy, with romantic hourglass shapes and sleek, curves-focused designs that left behind the utilitarian, angular designs of the sorrowful 40s. 50s fashion was all about hyper-feminine looks established by new-to-the-scene designers.

While it’s hard to boil down an entire decade’s worth of fashion trends into a few sentences, there are some key looks that helped define 50s style. Full skirts, petticoats, and tight waistlines were popular for women, as were cardigans, pearls, and hair accessories.
