Just Enough Internet, through collective and cooperative action, to build stronger societies — what a great mix of missions and brands.

A few weeks ago Rachel published the latest blog about the Collective Action Labs we are starting in April.

The Collective Action Labs are an opportunity to translate the “Just enough Internet” concept into a real-world concept: what does “just enough” technology look like in a City? In a community?

Since then, the world has changed considerably and in the midst of a global pandemic we wondered whether we should go ahead with these. However, we realised that the conversations we were going to facilitate could be richer and more important than before because people’s experience of using technology has been unimaginably accelerated. Civil society organisations have been undergoing a digital transformation in a matter of weeks, responding to the needs of communities, families and individuals, who have been propelled online.

  • What is this new normal?
  • How do we feel about it?
  • What are the benefits of this in the short term?
  • Are there any disadvantages?
  • How would you feel if you were still working this way in a year? Would that be a positive or a negative change?
  • How about in 3 years?
  • What are the tradeoffs we are making?

These are some of the questions we will be exploring in the initial workshops — using what comes out of them to compose a compelling vision of what “Just Enough Internet” means for civil society at this time and into the future.

The workshop will run from 10am — 2pm, with several breaks away from the screen. There is a £100 honorarium available for each civil society organisation to take part, which will be administered after the event. Sign up for the event here and please pass on.

We will prioritise civil society organisations based in Greater Manchester but others can attend if there is space as we think the work has universal relevance.
