There is Something About These Women

“There is something
so inexplicably disarming
about women who wear shirts with ruffled collars,
women who tie their hair up in buns
or let their unruly braids and waves roam wild like
breeze-kissed ferns.
There is something disenchanting
about these women with worries
lurking in the corners
of their pressed-together lips,
women with thick-soled boots
their chafed, restless mouths
canoodling cigarettes.
There is something in them
that speaks to me
these women with sun-burnt skin
and scars on display,
women who line their hands with follies
and their bags with wisps of
leftover chocolate.
There is something unspeakably real
about these women and that is why
I yearn to find them.
These women who walk a gait so powerful
their will could move mountains,
women who speak only when it is time
and stay silent when it isn’t.
Women who make everything alright
just with a few words, a sincere nod and
a heart-melting smile.
So here is to the women
who refuse to hide their fury,
here is to the women who brave sorrow,
suffering and glow brighter
with each fading day
who make the irony of being alive
seem mere child’s play,
who wear black on all occasions,
and refuse to smile at strangers,
who carry love to their innermost core
and live only to make its presence felt
to the world.
And when you look at them
you can see beauty mingled with passion,
intense courage and strength come alive
in the weathered lines
of their glorious eyes.”
