What is “The File Cabinet”?
Back in the day, I used to cut out newspaper articles for future reference. I would use this clever tool pictured to the left to do it. Of course, the Internet has changed all that and now I can download and save as many articles as I want for later reference. And I haven’t used the tool, nor has it even crossed my mind, for years. But when I looked in the pencil holder on my desk at home, there it was, standing amidst old pens and pencils and a letter opener, all of which have fallen into disuse.
But I digress — the Internet created a new problem — it is now so easy to save articles that I ended up with a huge digital pile of saved pieces that I never did anything with, and anyway, if I ever needed to reference virtually anything about any subject, there’s Google. Why save anything?
So the posts on this blog are about articles and research reports that I found particularly interesting, insightful, compelling, and potentially useful in my own writing, professional presentations, discussion with colleagues or everyday conversations.
I make them public because it forces me to be coherent writing about why I found them important and because any readers who happen across it may find this a place to discover interesting writing they might otherwise have missed.
