Charlize Theron Gets Her Own “John Wick” In The First “Atomic Blonde” Trailer

Charlize Theron, who is coming off of her acclaimed performance in Mad Max: Fury Road which was a Best Picture nominee and which won her the MTV Movie Award for Best Female Performance, is continuing to ride high on action stardom with the upcoming Atomic Blonde. (Originally titled The Coldest City)

Atomic Blonde is being directed by David Leitch who is one of the co-directors on John Wick and is about an MI6 spy named Lorraine Houghton (Charlize Theron) who is dispatched to Berlin to take down an underground crime ring that just dispatched an undercover agent for reasons unknown.

While the plot may seem pretty generic, the film looks like it’ll be made worthwhile thanks to Charlize Theron’s performance and also James McAvoy who plays a Berlin station chief that Lorraine is dispatched with. (Also, his coat looks badass)

Also, the trailer does demonstrate plenty of visual parallels to John Wick when it comes to the cinematography as well as the use of long tracking shots that follow our main heroine as the action takes place.

So it is easy to write this film off as just a female carbon copy of John Wick. It might not even have a story of substance for all we know because the trailer doesn’t reveal too much. But this is something I would still see in theaters. It looks like it’ll be a fun popcorn film and it is led by an exceptional leading actress. It also boasts an incredible cast that includes James McAvoy, John Goodman, Sofia Boutella, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, and Til Schweiger.

Atomic Blonde will be released in the summer on July 28th by Focus Features.
