Claire Foy Is The New Frontrunner For Lisbeth Salander In “The Girl In The Spider’s Web”

It has been reported that Claire Foy is in early talks for the role of Swedish goth hacker Lisbeth Salander in the film adaptation of The Girl In The Spider’s Web, the latest novel from the Milennium series originally created by late author Stieg Larsson. If Foy is cast, she will inherit the role from Noomi Rapace who played Lisbeth in the original film trilogy (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest) and Rooney Mara who played the role in the recent Americanized version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, scoring a Best Actress Oscar nomination for it.

Given her career momentum thanks to her awards run on the Netflix series The Crown, it shouldn’t seem like that much of a surprise that Claire Foy is being courted for the role. She is also being approached by Universal Pictures to star opposite Ryan Gosling in the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man which is why a deal to star as Lisbeth hasn’t been finalized quite yet due to potential scheduling conflicts.

Apparently, Felicity Jones who is enjoying plenty of career momentum herself, thanks to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and her Best Actress Oscar nomination for The Theory Of Everything, has also been courted for the role as well.

Since I haven’t really seen any of Claire Foy’s work, I can’t really say how I feel about her tackling the role. Although she is a very interesting choice and much different than some of the names I personally have suggested like Abbey Lee and Sofia Boutella. So I’m willing to keep an open mind if she were cast and see what she brings to the table.

Admittedly, I’m not too crazy about there being a reboot in the first place because I love what Rooney Mara and director David Fincher did with Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and was hoping they would return to complete the film series.

But from a business perspective, it is easy to see why they would start over. Dragon Tattoo earned a meager $102.5 million stateside against a $90 million dollar budget. Even if it wasn’t a colossal flop, it still evidently wasn’t the kind of results that the film’s distributor Sony was hoping for.

In spite of them starting over, I am still curious about how they will start over. It does have Fede Alvarez, who did the Evil Dead remake and Don’t Breathe, at the helm. So there is some promise and we’ll see if Claire Foy’s casting becomes official.

What do you guys think? Are you on board with this casting decision and what do you think of them rebooting this franchise? Please be sure to leave comments and share your thoughts. Thanks for reading!
