Jake Gyllenhaal And Benedict Cumberbatch Will Head To “Rio”

Italian director Luca Guadagnino has been on a bit of a streak lately. Just last year, he released the erotic ensemble drama A Bigger Splash starring Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton. He recently wrapped the remake of the 1977 horror film Suspiria while having the awards player and festival sensation Call Me By Your Name released later this November.

Now it appears he has yet another deal in place as he will be heading down to Rio De Janeiro for the thriller Rio starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Benedict Cumberbatch and penned by Oscar nominated screenwriter Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things).

The plot revolves around a financial reporter (Gyllenhaal) who heads down to Rio De Janeiro to visit his wealthy friend (Cumberbatch), only for him to get wrapped up in a plot to fake his friend’s death.

The plot sounds very intriguing and there is uncertainty as to what kind of film this could be. Is it a serious thriller or a dark comedy? Hard to tell. But the involvement of Jake Gyllenhaal, who’s currently one of my favorite actors, and Luca Guadagnino already has me sold. Gyllenhaal is an actor that keeps upping his game with every project he does and is someone can make the most middleground film like Southpaw or Love and Other Drugs immensely watchable. Although Benedict Cumberbatch is an actor who may be capable yet is someone I personally prefer to see in smaller doses (12 Years A Slave, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Black Mass) rather than see him carry a picture on his shoulders. But we’ll see how big of a role he has here.

What do you guys think? Does the talent involve have you excited and what do you think of the plot? Please be sure to leave comments. Thanks for reading!
