Taron Egerton In Talks To Play Elton John In Biopic “Rocketman”

For four years, Tom Hardy has been circling a biopic about Sir Elton John called Rocketman. But now, Hardy has officially bowed out and Kingsman star Taron Egerton is apparently on talks to take over and play the famed musician.

Rocketman is said to follow the life of Sir Elton John when he was in the Royal Academy of Music along with how he teamed up with Bernie Taupin who wrote the lyrics of some of his greatest hits (“Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer) and several scandals that have followed his career. Director Dexter Fletcher, who collaborated with Egerton on Eddie The Eagle, along with Kingsman producer Matthew Vaughn, are behind the project.

Hardy said that he left the project because he admitted to having trouble carrying a tune. To me, that’s understandable. Especially as we start to see actors face severe backlash for having so much as subpar singing vocals when doing a musical. But Taron Egerton has proven himself as not just a capable actor but someone capable of holding a tune.

Also, given his current rising star heat with projects like the Kingsman franchise and Robin Hood: Origins on the horizon along with once being in the running for the role of Han Solo in the upcoming Han Solo prequel, it’s not too surprising that Taron Egerton’s name would attract interest in this project.

Fletcher and Vaughn are apparently looking to fast track the project so that they can film later this year. But if a deal with Egerton can be finalized, then it’s likely we’ll see it come out next year.
