Figure skater Anastasia Allen has dedicated her life to pursuing her Olympic dreams. With a focused mindset, a strict schedule, and a no-nonsense attitude, she has little room for distractions. However, her path intersects with Nate Hawkins, the handsome captain of the university’s hockey team, creating an unwanted complication. Due to a prank gone awry, Anastasia and Nate are forced to share a rink, and when her partner gets injured, Nate steps in as a replacement. As they both strive for their goals and face an uncertain future, falling in love becomes a risky proposition. Despite their best intentions, spending time together breaks down walls and makes it increasingly difficult to suppress their feelings.

Anyone who enjoys sports romances and stories of enemies-turned-lovers, as well as fans of Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series, will find Icebreaker captivating. The book features a unique twist on the sunshine x grumpy dynamic, with Anastasia having a tough exterior and strict, almost intimidating personality, while Nate is kind-hearted and cheerful. The story evokes a reminiscent feeling of the film Cutting Edge, offering a modern and spicier tone. Even for those who are not avid followers of hockey or figure skating, the book cleverly incorporates essential details about both sports without overwhelming the reader. The sports serve as a backdrop against which the relationship between Stassie and Nate unfolds. While sports remain relevant throughout the novel, the primary focus is on romance, and Hannah Grace delivers on this front.

Initially, I had concerns about Anastasia as a main character after the first few chapters. Her cold treatment of Nate made me fear that she would be the kind of lead character who keeps her emotions bottled up and never allows the hero to get close. Unnecessary drama and miscommunication are pet peeves of mine in romance novels, which contributes to my love-hate relationship with the genre. However, their evolving dynamic, particularly the humorous banter and palpable sexual tension, compelled me to keep reading. I am grateful that my initial impression did not deter me.

Both protagonists gradually won me over with each subsequent chapter. It felt as if I was getting to know them layer by layer, just as Nate and Stassie were discovering each other. Their chemistry is undeniable, and when the tension between them finally erupts, reading the scenes in public becomes quite risky. While the novel cannot be categorized as erotica, the intimate scenes are incredibly steamy and explicit, ranking among the best spice I have encountered in a New Adult book.

Nate is an endearing character, caring and tender. He emanates a protective older brother vibe, yet behind closed doors, he surpasses characters like Christian Grey or Gideon Cross. He effortlessly combines the qualities of a good guy and a rogue, setting higher expectations for male romantic leads. Grace has truly crafted an exceptional male main character in Icebreaker.

Although both Anastasia and Nate are well-written and make an enjoyable couple to follow, it is the secondary characters who steal the show. Personally, I appreciate a diverse range of characters, and there is something inexplicably appealing about large groups or crews in stories. Nate’s entire hockey team is an entertaining bunch, displaying spectacular bromance and unwavering loyalty that feels authentic. Moreover, with so many college guys thrown together, chaos and hilarious shenanigans are guaranteed. While providing unwavering support, the guys also pose as the main source of trouble for Nate. This book not only evokes blushes but also induces stomachaches from laughter. Since more books are planned in this universe, there is hope that these characters will get their own stories. If you find yourself falling for these characters as I did, there is still more to come.
