“We study history not to know the future but to widen our horizons, to understand that our present situation is neither natural nor inevitable, and that we consequently have many more possibilities before us than we imagine.”
Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

How to widen our horizons? How to open up to the many more possibilities before us?

I believe there must be another way to live life. I believe there must be a better way. How to find this other way? When reading the book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari, I realized that the first step to moving into a radical new direction, is the acknowledgement that we do not know. We as humankind have not yet found the answers to some of the important questions about life. How to live life? How to be happy? How to end suffering? How to step into our own greatness? Who am I, really? If we knew the answers, wouldn’t we all be happy and fulfilled?

Yuval Harari describes that the great scientific revolution came about when people started to acknowledge that they did not have all the answers, that they did not know, that there were gaps in their knowledge. For the first time in the history of the world, a culture was making maps with empty areas marked for exploration.

They not only started to leave open spaces on the world map, they also started to acknowledge the gaps in their knowledge in other fields, such as botanics, geography, medicine, linguistics, history. This attitude of ignorance, of not knowing, ignited a revolution of knowledge, the Scientific Revolution and lead to many groundbreaking discoveries in all kind of areas. The progress in the scientific world is still going on, since the scientific tradition is willing to admit that a lot is unknown and even what’s known can be incorrect if new evidence to the contrary shows up.

I believe the time is right for the next step in our evolution. I believe the time is right to expand this vision of ignorance and not knowing beyond science and the material reality, towards other important questions in life. Who am I? How to live our best lives? Where to find the answers? Where the Scientific Revolution was ignited with the idea that we do not have all the knowledge, I believe that the Spiritual Revolution may be ignited with the same attitude towards living life. What would be possible if we started acknowledging that we do not know about matters of the heart, about things we cannot see or touch but at some level perceive they exist? Just imagine.

This idea of letting go all we think we know, and being willing and open to the fact that we do not know, is also mentioned in A Course In Miracles:

“ Simply do this: Be still and lay aside all thoughts of what you are; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Hold onto nothing. Forget this world, forget this course ….

We merely close our eyes, and then forget all that we thought we knew and understood.”

Just imagine the possibilities we have before us, if we are open to explore the unexplored, to move beyond anything we have known or thought possible. I would like to invite you to open up to the secrets and mysteries of life, to welcome the new experience of this moment. Starting with the acknowledgement: I DO NOT KNOW.

Are you willing to leave your ideas behind? Are you ready to join the spiritual revolution? I would love to hear what you discover!
