Stephen Hawking & the ALS Challenge
Twitter user @thestorysojar was first to make a (yes, cruel) joke about Stephen Hawking and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Aug. 15 at 5:07 p.m. ET. Many others made the same joke in the days and weeks that followed.
The First Joke email-interviewed the guy who tweeted it first.
The First Joke: So why’s the joke funny?
Jarod Danscuk: I thought it was funny because Stephen Hawking is inclined to an electric wheelchair, so he can’t pour a bucket of ice over himself without assistance and damaging the wheelchair.
TFJ: Tell me about how you came up with it? What were you doing?
JD: I was sitting with a friend and we were discussing people that most likely couldn’t do the ALS Ice Bucket challenge to nominate after I was nominated, and Hawking came to mind immediately.
TFJ: I think what makes the joke particularly resonant with some people is that Stephen Hawking cannot pour water over himself because he has ALS. Did you know that or were you just lucky?
JD: I knew that Hawking had a muscular disease, but I wasn’t sure that it was ALS until you just confirmed it. So I guess that makes me lucky!
TFJ: What do you have to say to all these people?
JD: I have nothing to say other than great minds think alike.
(Editor’s note: The joke’s on you. Stephen Hawking made an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video after all. He couldn’t actually dump freezing cold water over his head because he got pneumonia last year and, well, it wouldn’t be “wise.”)
