Folks Didn’t Know Doctors are Black, Holding Your Newborn Could Cost $40, and the Runway Diversity Report

Picture this: you’re on a flight and someone falls ill. Their wife asks for help and the flight attendants start searching the aisles for a doctor. You’re a doctor. You raise your hand. “Oh no sweetie put [your] hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don’t have time to talk to you,” is the response you’re given.
Such was the case of Dr. Cross on a recent flight from Detroit. After several attempts were made to get the attention of in-flight staff, she was then asked her field of medicine, her credentials, and why she was in Detroit. According to Dr. Cross, a white man who offered help as a doctor was never asked for credentials. Why? Because he looked more like a doctor. Skin-to-Skin Contact With Your Newborn Will Cost Ya
Skin-to-skin contact with newborns immediately after delivery has a ton of benefits. It reduces the baby’s stress after a C-section, helps with breast feeding, and encourages bonding between mother and child. One woman noticed after her delivery that skin-to-skin cost her an extra $39.95.
Before you get outraged, there’s actually a good reason for this. Skin-to-skin requires an additional nurse in the operating room. Post C-section, mothers can become nauseous or even faint. The good news is that more hospitals are doing skin-to-skin and looking at the bill above, 40 bucks is a drop in a bucket. (Via Refinery 29)
Actually, No. Runway Diversity is Not Getting Any Better
HuffPo put together this handy dandy pie chart to show the terrible lack of diversity on the spring/summer runways. The full graph breaks down the racial makeup of models in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. New York had the most diversity, with Kanye West’s Yeezy presentation topping the list with 97% models of color. On the other end of the spectrum were Junya Watanabe, The Row and others who featured absolutely no models of color. Zero. (Via Huffington Post)
