What Happened When We Taught Kids About Periods

Spoiler alert: we filmed the entire thing (and it’s hilarious)

To celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day (MHD), we wanted to find out what kids already know (and what they think) about periods.

But first, a brief history about the importance of Menstrual Hygiene Day:

• MHD is dedicated to breaking those nasty taboos and raising awareness about the access to good menstrual hygiene for women and adolescent girls worldwide
• The day is meant to serve as a platform to bring together badass women, in-the-know men, businesses, orgs and media to create a powerful, united voice to break the silence about menstruation
• And why May 28? May is the 5th month of the year and most women average 5 days every month and their cycle is approximately 28 days. (Symbolic AF)
• According to the organizers at nonprofit WASHUnited, this year’s theme isMenstruation Matters To Everyone, Everywhere. (This means engaging men and boys in conversations about menstruation, too).

So why did we want to talk to children about periods?

We agree that education is key to ending the stigma surrounding menstruation, and believe in most cases kids find it fun to learn about their bodies. Starting the conversation early can help shift how the younger generation treats the topic, the products, and ultimately, women and girls.
