FOMO: Fear of Missing Out. A term coined in the past decade by Patrick McGinnis a former Harvard MBA turned venture capitalist and author, it is a fear or anxiety rooted in the human mind and compounded by the spread of social media in our daily lives. Symptoms include checking the phone every two minutes for fear of missing out.

FOOD+ journal’s FOMO section is about food-related discussions, information, happenings in that the editors have come across and think you shouldn’t miss out on. We will share stories worthy of your time, books to indulge in, events to hit, or articles to sink into. We will include suggestions of films to watch, recipes to try out, or trends to keep a tab on, even love letters to get inspired by. The aim is to feed your incessant curiosity and enrich your social wallet.

Our second FOMO comes after a long Summer break — not that we have just been lazy, but we had to get our grey cells working on a few projects. Today we are digging into the science of food tasting.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic in many industries and China is one of the leading countries in this field, so it is no wonder that now Chinese robots are testing food for quality and authenticity. Soon, the Michelin inspectors are going to be out of a job. Read the full story here.

There is more than just taste when it comes to good food. Research is showing that all of our senses are at play even the less expected ones like hearing. Is the secret ingredient for success of some restaurants also in their playlist?

At least one person in the world decided to take the matter seriously: in New York, renowned musician and composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto was so annoyed by the thoughtless music his favourite restaurant was playing that he decided to help them put together the perfect combination of music to pair with their food. Is playlister the new talent restaurants should look for?

AGENDA

If you happen to be not far from Lyon (France) this week, you may want to hit the Lyon Street Food Festival from September 12th to 15th. Besides superstars like Mauro Colagreco (Mirazur) and Mathieu Viannay (La mère Brazier), the line-up of chefs is impressive and will take you on a culinary road-trip from Kobe (Japan), Hong Kong, Madrid to Finland.

If you know or have heard about, read or watched something interesting that you think other readers should not miss out on, feel free to contribute by writing to the editors here.
