Atletico 2 PSG 1FT

Parc des Princes, Paris

The Champions League continues this new format. On Wednesday night we would see a battle between two Giants That have struggled this campaign We would be at the Parc des Princes In Paris as PSG host Athletico Madrid. Luis Enrique against Diego Simeone Both sides are at risk of not even making the playoff in this Champions League format. Neither side anywhere near automatic qualification far away from the top eight of this Champions League table. With nine matches in the group phase of this campaign, It's starting to become a breaking point for both of them. Both sides require a result as it feels like a must-win. PSG in the league without mbappe has been More than sufficient, they have collected 26 points from their first 10 games as they are unbeaten in the league. However, in the Champions League, They have been wildly unimpressive. A fortunate victory against Girona, beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates, and draw against PSV At home. They have only taken three points from the Champions League in three matches this campaign. On the other side, Athletico Madrid currently sits in the top three in La Liga with 23 points from 12 matches as they have more than a sufficient campaign. However, their Champions League journey this season has consisted of A 2-1 victory against Leipzig then a 3-1 loss to Lille, and a 4-0 loss to Benfica. Both Atletico Madrid and PSG Are staring at a disaster As they approach a very important crossroad of their Champions League campaigns. If it ended today neither side would qualify for the knockout rounds or the playoff round. They would be eliminated by both of them. As kickoff approaches in Paris, there is great importance and the one that falls short could have grave consequences in this Champions League.

We would see a parallel between two very different types of teams. Meanwhile, the defensive structure of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid is the attacking-centric play of PSG Led by Bradley Barcola & Ousmane Dembélé. PSG looks to have a sharp start. Inside the first minute, they came close as Achraf Hakimi dragged an effort From the side of the box towards the bottom left corner only slightly dragging a bit wide. PSG nearly cracked it open from the first 60 seconds. In the 5th minute, they kept it going as Ousmane Dembélé Shows a level of explosion cutting from the left side. He looks to hook it over the corner but puts too much power on it. It continued to be primarily PSG in the attack as Atletico Madrid sat back. In the 13th minute Ousmane Dembélé connects with Bradley Barcola unloading a strike at Jan Oblak But the Slovenian shot-stopper makes the save. Defensively everything was going well for Atletico Madrid almost according to plan. However, In the 14th minute, Athletico Madrid would have a defensive lapse. After being pressed by Ousmane Dembélé Athletico Madrid gave it away in their box. It was then picked up by Warren Zaire-Emery he popped it over Jan Oblak As PSG took a 1-0 lead. Athletic Madrid was then forced to bite back and push forward. The La Liga side had been holding a very insignificant amount of possession. Athletico Madrid certainly had the tools the attack. In the 17th minute. Rodrigo de Paul picks out Giuliano Simeone He strikes the ball from close range but Donnarumma manages to make the save. It lands in the lap of Nahuel Molina As he strikes it on the first touch, sending it into the top right corner to grab The Equalizer. As Athletico Madrid. Come back and respond immediately. All of a sudden it became somewhat of a chess match. PSG withstood their huge advantage in possession but outside of the one mistake. Atletico Madrid have defended them extremely well. It seemed like it was going to come down to who makes the first mistake. In the 30th minute, PSG win themselves a set piece. Hakimi delivers a ball into the box Marco Asensio gets his head on the end of it as it drifts wide. Then on the corner, Warren Zaire-Emery does the same as his header hooks the other way. PSG unable to capitalize in a big way off of their higher volume of chances thus far. Athletico Madrid suffocates them for the rest of the first half as time expires with Athletico, Madrid, and PSG exchanging a goal of apiece.

PSG May have had the higher volume of chances thus far. However, it's hard to say that they've established any kind of superiority. It's been pretty matched from top to bottom. A point spared certainly wouldn't appear to be good enough for either. One of these teams needed to pull away. A draw doesn't help anyone. Atletico, Madrid, and PSG want to avoid elimination. They need to finish in the top 16 and at this moment both of them are on the outside hey, victory seemed necessary as we expected to see a very tense final 45 minutes. PSG picked up their aggressiveness a bit further. They continually looked to attack this fairly competent athletico Madrid defense. In the 54th minute Achraf Hakimi followed through on the right side of the box As he drives it low Jan Oblak gets his hands on it Ousmane Dembélé Hits the follow-up coming close As it narrowly hooks over the corner. This only continued for the Paris-based side. In the 56th minute Bradley Barcola strikes from close range but again runs into trouble as Jan Oblak was putting his best foot forward. Achraf Hakimi goes for it on the follow-up but is unable to capitalize. Persisted to be one-way traffic. As we got later into the affair Athletico Madrid's defensive composure continued to be how they attacked the game. There haven't been a lot of opportunities for The La Liga side. Perhaps they were waiting for a calculated shot rather than a risk In the attack. In the 64th minute, Bradley Barcola strikes from the side of the box Jan Oblak In there again to make the save. João Neves then puts it Forward from distance again denied. In the 68 minutes, Lee Kang-In follows through from outside the box. Running into the defense then Nuno Mendes possesses the ball and does the same, but the Atletico Madrid defense continues and continues to shut down a high-functioning PSG attack. In the 72nd minute, Marquinhos tries to drive a header off of a cross towards the left corner Jan Oblak deals with the situation yet again. Only for Achraf Hakimi To give it another go in the 77th minute but no matter what they've done Jan Oblak couldn't be beaten. With roughly 7 minutes to go Antoine Griezmann provides Atletico Madrid with their first shot of the second half as the French playmaker from outside the box follows through But his effort lifts As it comes across his foot driving the ball upwards out of reach Donnarumma unbothered by the attempt. A minute later in the 86th minute, Vitinha makes a run down the side trying to find an opening but ultimately can't find one as the defense closes down quickly. In the 90th minute, it looked like a PSG was eventually going to break through. Achraf Hakimi sends a delivery into the box Randal Kolo Muani follows through on the header as it misses the mark. Désiré Doué then tries to find an opening but again the Atletico Madrid defense stands in the way. In the 93rd minute, Lee Kang-In strikes one from outside the box. A save is made by Jan Oblak with only 20 seconds to go roughly Atletico Madrid made a late surge. With PSG essentially pressing their entire team forward, the Slovenian got an idea a wicked idea. He launches the ball out of his box as he chucks it down the pitch. Antoine Griezmann collects it with acres of space in front of him. A couple of PSG defenders trying to rush back. However, Athletico Madrid ended up having the upper hand. PSG managed to get a couple of defenders back in the area, however, it was too late. Griezmann sends the ball over to Angel Correa In the last second of the game he drills it into the bottom left corner as Atletico Madrid wins it at the death as Donnarumma Can barely look following a defensive collapse in the final seconds. Athletico Madrid come to Paris and leave with a 2-1 victory off of a dramatic late finish.

PSG fell again in the Champions League. As they suffer their second loss and heartbreaking circumstances. PSG have failed nearly every test that has been thrown their way in this new Champions League format. They got bailed out with an own goal against Girona. Then they failed to beat PSV at home. They got beaten by Arsenal in London and now at home. In the league, they have been very sufficient and they haven't missed mbappe too much. There's no doubt that this PSG side has the necessary qualities to go on a deep run in the Champions League. Last season they made the semi-final and almost even made the Champions League final. Now as good as they have been in the French league that is expected. They have more money than anybody else and more quality than anyone else. The usbian perhaps it's down to the format itself. However, they have fallen short in practically every single situation. Even in the match they won, they were lucky to do so. As it currently stands. Atletico Madrid has four points in the Champions League this season. They currently Would be eliminated if the Champions League group phase ended today. They are one point out of getting into the playoff portion, however, they're going to need to show their best going forward. They dominated the game in a lot of ways. Athletic Madrid showed their qualities primarily defensively and it's very possible without the defensive mistake that they made. PSG would never have scored. They had 71% possession They had 22 shots in total with nine on target. Meanwhile, on the other side, Athletic Madrid took four shots. The entire game scoring three, two of them ended up as a goal. PSG even had much More accurate passing with 91% against 74%. Athletico Madrid defended extremely well and took their chances. Meanwhile, PSG did not. Athletico Madrid sat back and defended the whole way. Luis Enrique will be judged based on his Champions League campaign. Not whether or not PSG win the league again. To lose at the death this way at home against a team that defended the entire 90 minutes Is an extremely bad look as it looks like their Champions League campaign could be coming to a close sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, Athletico Madrid made one mistake immediately. Got The Equalizer hit back, scored their goal sat back sat on it, and then at the end They took advantage of PSG's extra aggressiveness. Jan Oblak played an outstanding match and goal. He truly was keeping them alive and then the moment happens. He chucks that ball forward with PSC completely out of position. They hit on the counter and with the seconds going down in stoppage time they grab a winner. It's not as if athletico Madrid has been brilliant in the Champions League. They have struggled just as much but the three points they have now taken in Paris puts them back on Pace for qualification. PSG could very well be heading for elimination. Their final four games are against Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, RB Salzburg, and Manchester City They very easily could lose two out of those four. They will look at this match in regret as an opportunity missed. Athletico Madrid are also on The chopping block despite the victory. They are holding on to qualifications by one point. Their final four matches are quite favorable though as they will face Slovan Bratislava, Sparta Prague, Leverkusen & RB Salzburg this may turn out to be a huge win with the possibility of taking as many as all four to end the Champions League group face. Atletico Madrid struck at the death dramatically as stun PSG in Paris.
