Freiburg 3 Frankfurt 3FT

We are in the marvelous city of Freiburg on this Saturday afternoon. Freiberg is the home to the black forest. One of Germany’s most fascinating sceneries. The black forest begins a little over 45 minutes from the stadium. As it is a tourist interest point. Within a relatively short distance of Europa Park station is the Freiburg Stadttheater a theater that has been in operation since 1886 as it is one of the best locations for the arts in Germany and let’s not forget the medieval component to the city. None more famous than Patrick’s gate. A fantastic tourist location for those who have a chance to visit. The city itself is a hidden gem genuinely one of the most wonderful cities in all of Germany the heart of the major Baden wine-growing region. With all the beauty and intrigue that presents just like most cities in Germany, the people are Freiburg love their football. The cold spell continues to affect Germany. There are no warm atmospheres at least for the foreseeable future. As Freiburg hosts Frankfurt in a European battle. As it is 8th vs 6th here at the black forest. Only four points separate. The two sides as a huge swinger momentum could be at stake. Freiburg hasn’t been the side we’ve been used to seeing over the years. Three consecutive losses in the Bundesliga without a win since their 3–2 victory against Hoffenheim on January 20th. They are experiencing a certain level of adversity, and a great performance here certainly could drive them out of it. Meanwhile on the other side of the coin for Frankfurt may have two wins in their last five which is fairly reasonable, but their last three performances have certain left something to be desire with the acquisition they have brought to Frankfurt in January and the team that is being built this season. The recent performances has been more than disappointing. While they do hold the last European position by a moderate margin that can go away in an instance. They’ve been a wildly inconsistent side and just like Freiburg. Need a shift in momentum to get them back on track and hopefully to reestablish themselves. As a European side. They don’t want to feel as if they need to look over their shoulder with another potential European threat chasing them down. Both Freiburg and Frankfurt in need of points. They are comfortable in the top 10, but the objective is European, football and both sides need to strengthen their positions in this second half of the season with so much at stake. At the Europa Park station we would find out which of these two European hopefuls has the edge at this vital crossroad in this Bundesliga season.

It seemed fairly even in the early goings of the first half. Both sides looking to take advantage where they can and try to capitalize on early moments. Unfortunately, there weren’t too many moments in the early part of the match. It took a while for things to start opening up as it was possession-based football at the very beginning. Unfortunately for Frankfurt Sasa Kalajdzic had to be removed due to injury after only 11 minutes. The new loan signing from Wolverhampton has gotten off to a rocky start the injury certainly not helping the situation. Knauff comes on to replace the Austrian as Frankfurt adding a bit of athleticism. It wasn’t until the 22nd minute until we had a chance. Vincenzo Grifo takes the ball forward dumping it off towards Roland Sallai but his attempt from distance is deflected as he can’t squeeze it through. Frankfurt would immediately reply as they take advantage and capitalize on their first chance of the game. Philip Max delivers a cross into the box Omar Marmosh picks it up on the left cuts into the box before sliding it into the bottom corner a silky finish as Frankfurt takes a 1–0 lead. They would hold on to the lead for all but 3 minutes. In the 30th minute Lucas Holer puts Ronald Sallai in a goal his initial strike is saved by Kevin Trapp but Doan cleans it up on the rebound and sends it into the back of the net to equalize just 3 minutes after conceding. In a blank of an eye just like that, we would see an immediate response to their response from Frankfurt. In the 35th minute Frankfurt smashes a ball from outside of the box through the air, setting up an incredible counter attacking situation. Omar Marmosh drags the ball from coast to coast all the way through before dumping it in for Knauff as he slices it into the back of the net as Frankfurt retake a 2–1 in a span of 8 minutes, three goals find the back of the net! Only for 10 minutes later for this thriller to add even more chaos. In the 45th minute Lucas Holer is taken out in the box by Hasebe a penalty is given. Vincenzo Grifo steps up and sends it into the bottom corner to grab an equalizer right before the break. After the first half it has been total chaos at the Europa Park station with Frankfurt and Freiburg with two goals apiece with all four goals being scored within 18 minutes in what has been a vastly entertaining opening 45 minutes 2–2 at the break.

It’s been a fairly evenly contested battle this far. Frankfurt perhaps looking like the slightly more advanced side in that first half but only just. It has truly been a back and forth. End to end battle with a big 45 minutes to determine the result. Freiberg very much looking to continue to build on the momentum with their equalizer at the end of the first time. In the 57th minute Lukas Holder looks to capitalize through the air as he appears as his head through the ball only for Kevin Trapp to make the critical save. Frankfurt returns fire immediately in the 58th minute Fares Chaibi delivers a ball into the box for Knauff his attempt on goal was well taken but Noah Atubolu comes up with it. Frankfurt look to push and persist as they grab a sense of momentum swing. In the 62nd minute Fares Chaibi strikes from distance. Unfortunately the Algerian puts a bit too much on it, not testing Noah Atubolu. Only for Frankfurt to take advantage of a critical moment. In the 72nd minute Omar Marmosh pics out a perfect pass for Knauff has he sends a rocket from just inside the box into the top right corner Frankfurt back in front for the third time as Knauff doubles up giving Frankfurt a 3-2 lead with less than 20 minutes to go. As we got into the later stages Freiburg still searching for the moment to at least grab something from the occasion. With 10 minutes to go in the 80th minute Ronald Sallai delivers a well placed ball into the box substitute Michael Gregoritsch header comes within the grasp of Kevin Trapp. Freiberg fight battle and sacrifice for the possibility of a late equalizer. In the 89th minute coming from a corner Noah Weißhaupt delivers a headed pass near the right post Michael Gregoritsch puts his head on the end of it sending it into the top corner as Freiberg once again, erase the deficit to draw level. With not much time remaining, that may have been the goal that have stolen them a point. In the 97th minute Frankfurt get them themselves a chance to retake the lead to add even more drama to the chaos. Hugo Ekitike makes a run done the right side at a tie angle tries beating Noah Atubolu as he makes a big time save. In the closing seconds. Freiberg through one roll of the dice Florent Muslija launches one from 35 yd out trying to catch Kevin Trapp off his line, but he makes the save as time expires. At the Europa Park station. We see a six goal thriller with neither side managing to pull away a late header from Michael Gregoritsch steals a Frankfort victory from their grasps.

Frankfurt and Freiberg haven’t been at their best as of late. That’s just the reality of the situation that they find themselves in. This turned out to be the best Bundesliga match of the weekend. This was an incredible thriller with so much intrigue anxiety with a cinematic finish. For the neutral viewer, this is exactly the quality of play and the level of chaos that one would want to see in the Bundesliga. It is a growing advertisement of how deep competitive and exciting the Bundesliga is weak in and week out. The lack of respect it gets is quite ridiculous and matches like this certainly help the growth and the respect towards German football. However, that said, even though it was incredibly entertaining from start to finish. Does the result in the end as awesome as a 3–3 draw can be does either Freiburg or Frankfurt benefit from this result whatsoever. That would be an emphatic no. Now, to be fair, one of the sides certainly should feel a little stronger about their performance and happier about the result than the other. However, it doesn’t move the needle for either side. The two realities are this Freiburg are dealing with a very complicated season. They’ve had to deal with a lot of adversity and with the other teams now being able to spend at a higher level it makes what Freiberg has historically done over the last 5 to 6 years. More difficult to get into these spaces where they can qualify for your European competitions. The squad that is assembled is still incredibly strong and has possibilities and potentials. However, it’s been a difficult season. They haven’t won a game since Hoffenheim and they’re not playing well on a consistent basis to what we saw from them, especially the last two seasons where they probably should have made the champions league in both seasons. However, their winless run continues, but you can take some positivity from a Freiburg perspective. A Frankfurt took the lead on a three separate occasions. Freiberg was able to pin it back each time. Their late equalizer in the 89th minute from Michael Gregoritsch saw them steal points from Frankfurt. The drama of managing to grab a point in the last minute. They can take a level of positivity from that. They’re still about four or five points out of a European position and need to start winning on a more regular basis and picking up points more regularly but they get a good result in the end even though I don’t think they’re overly happy about it. Meanwhile, Frankfurt had it within their grasp. It makes it look worse because they were in front on three different occasions and for some long stretches they were substantially the more polished team on Sunday. They looked stronger. They were legit in the counter attack what we saw from Omar Marmosh and Knauff was absolutely excellent. Nevertheless, they let it slip through their fingers. In the end. All they needed to do was hold off for another 5 or 10 minutes. They had chances in stoppage time to get themselves back in front and they mishandle those moments. Frankfurt are having a surprisingly good season again but they need to finish these games better. The amount of time they’ve seen maximum points slip through the fingers this season has been a big problem. When they take the lead they need to dive on it and ensure that They don’t give away anything. It was a tightly contested game for a good part of it but Frankfurt was always the one slightly with the momentum. So to see it snatch at a thin air is something that Frankfurt continually needs to address because this is happened far too long. Both teams should not be happy with the result but at least Freiberg can come away with it with high spirits and a bit of momentum. Meanwhile, Frankfurt came to the Europa Park Station and as good as they played let themselves down in the end a bitter taste in what was otherwise a strong performance as Freiburg and Frankfurt play through a six-goal thriller in the black forest.
