Don’t take it from me, but from the BBC of places that Manchester United Football Club are truly in a state of despair. Finishing a measly sixth place after a supreme start to the season, it is the thrill of defeat that washes over the fandom once again. There is no point in me dumping salt on the wounds, as one of football’s dynastic powerhouses has undoubtedly reached it’s lowest point since the glory days. From the various backroom mishaps to the unbelievably dismal transfer arrangements more reports of organisation incompetency are being reported on a daily basis. In all honesty, the fact that there was a need for 3 managers before the board properly understood just how dire the situation is shows as much.

From day one, the refreshing bluntness of one of the greatest brains in German football exposed the internal ineptitude, continually so, until fans and pundits alike urged him to stop. And yet he didn’t. Sources close to the club fed off the toxicity of the dressing room and had field day after field day of clickbait titles… and yet, somewhere in those headlines was the truth. Because, as we all know, the best lies are the ones with a sprinkle of truth in them.

Now, as we turn to hopefully a new era at the club, the same failings have become apparent. But this time, it’s different. Before, it was hope without so much of faith in historic successes. Now, however, it is the infinite promise that the fanbase are riding behind. The immeasurable potential that is so apparent in Erik Ten Hag’s style of coaching. One that fits perfectly with the ethos of Carrington and the spirit of Old Trafford. For now, those who hold the power seem to understand the need for a complete overhaul and are seemingly willing to bend to the Dutchman’s more than reasonable requests.

As for the fanbase, there is a certain feeling of joy tinged with hope and understanding for patience that is present. For the last step in dealing with grief is acceptance, and all signs point to a shift in mindset. Those with the red side of Manchester in their hearts are now eying the process of once again being considered amongst the best in football.
