The Rise of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in a COVID-19 Climate

During early September, a new trend commenced to run wild on the popular app TikTok. An alternate sub-group was created called Draco [Malfoy] TikTok or more commonly known as DracTok. It referred to an admiration of actor Tom Felton’s appearance on the infamous franchise: Harry Potter. The trend began a phenomenon that led to an increase in interest of the Harry Potter franchise.

As seen in the trend chart, searches of the words Harry Potter began to sky-rocket in early September. This demonstrates an old interest reemerging in the minds of people who had forgotten the magnificence and brilliance of the series of books and films. Furthermore, in times of isolation and anxiety from the current situation, the wonderful world created by J.K. Rowling exerts a sense of relief and immerses the reader/watcher in a world where they can take a little rest from reality. This new trend illustrates a longing of a fantastic world in dire times.

Insight is given into the state of mind of many people. A large portion of the world’s population’s lives have changed completely; many events have happened, thus by the starting of this trend that started because of young women admiring Tom Felton’s character, Draco Malfoy’s, looks.
