The Fourth Bluff collaborative is launching an open call for all Memphians to propose fresh ideas and programs that can be executed with a share of $100,000. The application is simple and there are only two rules:

  • The program must take place in the Civic Commons footprint (a roughly six-block area that stretches from Main Street to Mud Island, including the Memphis Harbor, and from Jefferson to Monroe with programs that take place on the River Line also eligible)
  • It must advance one of four goals: civic engagement, value creation, socioeconomic mixing, and environmental sustainability.

Grants will be distributed at four levels: $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000 for programs that will advance the four connected goals of Reimagining Civic Commons — a national initiative dedicated to reinvigorating our shared civic assets. Memphis is one of five cities nationwide to have received have received $4 million in support from Kresge, Knight, JPB, Rockefeller foundations to reinvest in shared public assets to build stronger communities. In Memphis, those funds have supported the transformation of River Garden, River Line and the work in-progress at the Cossitt Library as well as a series of activations and programs including RiverPlay and the Fourth Bluff Ice Rink.

Who can apply?

The challenge is open to all: artists, activists, students, entrepreneurs, educators, residents, as well as organizations and corporations. Anyone with a great idea and the commitment to carry it out is encouraged to apply!

What are the goals of the civic commons project?

Reimagining Civic Commons is a program to reinvigorate our shared civic assets and public spaces to bolster civic engagement, equity, environmental sustainability, and economic development. Your program should advance one or more of those goals. Review the definitions of each goal on the civic commons website.

How will you decide on winning applications?

We’ve recruited a team of community reviewers who will read and score each application. Primarily, we’re looking for imaginative programs that advance one or more of the goals of the civic commons. We’ll also be looking for innovation and ensuring that the applicant has the capacity to produce the requested program.

When and where can my program take place?

Programs may take place anytime between April and October of 2019 which includes one time and series programs. They must take place in the Fourth Bluff area — from Mud Island to Main Street (including the harbor) and between Jefferson and Monroe Streets. Programs can also take place on the River Line between Beale Street Landing and the AW Willis Bridge.
