Two- thirds

Hello there freestyle people! Hope you are doing well these days.

Sorry for the lag in my work efficiency and hence so few articles since the last two or three months. I have had some crazy times going on and a lot of offline work, hence the delay.

Well, what’s done is done. I will definitely get back to my weekly consistency soon enough.

Let’s begin then!

As some people would have guessed from the name of the article, this is about the precious 67% rule of freestyle football that various freestylers have applied on to their training since ages.

While the origin of this rule is still unknown(at least to me), it is popular among the hardcore freestylers who have used this technique time and again in their training sessions.

In this article, I will break down the rule into easy parts and try my best to explain where and how this rule can be applied in your training.

  1. When you learn a new trick

If you are going to learn a new trick the first thing you should know is the proper technique to do the trick (Wow! so insightful). It is pretty obvious that you won’t be able to the trick in the first few tries. So take your time and learn the proper technique for the trick.

Even after you have learned the technique for the trick, the work is still not done. You have to make sure that you can land the trick according to your will. To do that, we will apply the 67% rule.

Make sure that you can do the trick 67% of the time when training the trick (not combos, just the single trick). This means that if you have learned LATW, you should try to land it 6–7 times out of 10 (67%)when practicing it. This will help you inculcate the trick in your muscle memory.

Once that is done, you can definitely move onto more difficult tricks or try to combos with that trick. Using the 67% rule to learn a new trick makes sure you learn a trick properly and not jump steps while progressing.

2. To improve your basics/consistency

Basics are the building blocks of freestyle football. To be at a high level you will have to master the basics as much as possible. Although people have been jumping steps lately, let’s leave that topic for another day.

Okay! Say you have a certain record for doing a basic trick. Now it is true that your personal record will stand no matter how many times you can do that trick on a certain attempt, problems will arise when you are going to do combos with that basic trick.

So, while there is nothing wrong with setting personal records of various tricks, your focus should be on improving the consistency of that basic trick. So again, we apply the 67% rule. Let us say that your hop the world record is 20. You should be try and do about 13–14 HTWs on each attempt to improve your consistency.

Not only this will improve your consistency with the trick it will also help you improve upon your records really fast. Also you would be able to tricks with similar movement more easily.

3. To improve your weak foot/side

While this may not be a really necessary step, one should and try to improve upon his weak side to increase his level.

This is pretty simple. Suppose you can do a certain trick 10 times on your strong side, you should be able to do it on your weak side about 6–7 times. Again this can be applied to basics mostly, but you can try and step up your game by applying this to more hardcore stuff.

I personally would advise to build upon your stronger side a bit before moving on to your weak side. But the choice is yours, you can learn both sides parallel also.

I am sure that people can find some more uses of the 67% rule that I have not given here, but these will give you a general idea about the rule and its applicability.

Now this is not some magic formula that will make 100% sure that you will become a good freestyler. Just one of the many techniques used by freestylers who are at quite a good level.

Try to inculcate this technique in your training for a few weeks. Observe if you feel any difference. Stay happy and keep practicing !

If you have come this far, please click on that little green heart. Motivates me a lot! Talk to me anywhere you like if this technique helps you in any way. Also share it everywhere if you found it worth your time.

That’s all folks
