The Absence Of Fear

The coarse rope is taut around my neck. The crowd, spread out before the gallows, cries out for my death.
Strangely, I feel an absence of fear.
The priest-king steps forward, arms raised to hush the crowd.
“Release him. I have felt the presence of the gods. They demand mercy.”
