Reddit Inspection: MildlyVandalised

In a cultural climate where people on opposite ends of the political spectrum are in constant conflict, a crumb of moderation, politeness or tolerance is hard to come by.

Listening to whining SJWs or inflammatory alt-right trolls all day long is a mentally-taxing rabbit hole to explore and often not one you’ll emerge from feeling informed.

It’s important to understand a variety of views, but sometimes something mild is good to lessen the spice (or spite) of the world today.

MildlyVandalised inhabits such a moderate position: the page’s rules stipulate that “vandalism must be mild” and must result in “no costly property damage”.

The above image epitomises why I love this page: it makes a great point with a brief message scrawled into the very object being complained about.

There’s no bias, no spin, just a simple question drawing attention to a problem.

Commenters come to the conclusion that the only reason that there wouldn’t be plants is the same everyday argument faced by people who want to make their world a little greener: concrete is just cheaper.

You don’t often know who’s made this small, pertinent comment but it’s far easier to comprehend what it’s trying to say than any contrived political analysis.

Important points of discussion often get lost in the shit slinging between contrasting opinions and while this etching doesn’t make it easy for an opposing view to put across their side, it’s much harder to start an argument with an anonymous message than an ideologically-driven human forcing their thoughts on you.

This one actually stimulated some interesting debate in the comments section on whether fuel theft actually affects corporations or if it’s the store itself that takes the financial burden as they still have to pay an oil company for the stolen fuel.

It even brought up the issue of how to prevent fuel theft in the first place by only ever allowing a pay first-pump second approach.

User scabdick (great name mate) said they used to work at a petrol station in the US and was forced to pay for the lost fuel out of their own pocket. God knows if that’s legal but you’d surely think not?

That’s all a tad serious and the Subreddit is also home to a sort of comedy I don’t even know how to categorise.

It’s the sort of thing where an “F” is added to the Uckington sign near Cheltenham. It’s juvenile but I’ve seen the “F” added for years now and it never fails to make me chuckle when it inevitably crops up again after someone washes it off. I like to think it’s the same committed person adding it every time.

Here duct tape is used to mildly deface a brand of tape, much to the delight of Redditor Convicted_Vapist420.

And don’t be one of those people being upset at the mere mention of the word rape. It isn’t trivialising the crime or its victims, it’s just a word used for moderate comic effect.

Gape would also have been acceptable. It’s only a bit of tape so I hope someone does mix it up and adds a “G”.

I don’t even know if the next one is real and it could easily start a genre of fish-themed vandalism that would be wellworth its own Subreddit.

There might be some sort of commentary eluding me here yet the comments section seems just as bemused.

Ironcymru reckons it’s a known distraction scam used to snatch the wallets of understandably confused victims.

It’s most likely a practical pun about phishing scams but I still find it fascinating that anyone would make the effort of strapping a poor mackerel to a cashpoint simply for the sake of a gag.

I pray for the day I come across something like that.

Some have said it’s a waste of the fish’s life but I would argue that by generating interest and discussion between hundreds of people, the little fella has more than fulfilled his destiny.

SilentStarryNight wasn’t happy it made the Subreddit, however.

There’s certainly grounds for exclusion but, on balance, I think the mackerel’s justified his spot.

I’ll leave you with this one bit of madness.

This is the sort of gateway mischief that’ll eventually lead to the dissolution of society. Nutter.
