At Upbeat HQ we’re constantly looking for ways to help the nation get healthier and happier through the powers of whey protein.

We’ve supported research into the role protein plays for muscle health through our sister company Volac, which last year discovered that consuming a daily whey protein shake can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by a considerable 8%.

At Upbeat we’re constantly looking for ways to help the nation get healthier and happier.

And now, an independent study using our protein has identified another fantastic benefit of protein that you’ll already be enjoying if you’re an Upbeat fan.

The new study, from Loughborough University and published in the European Journal of Nutrition, found that consuming a whey protein drink after exercise instead of a carbohydrate drink — such as an energy drink like Lucozade Sport — makes you significantly less likely to scoff too much food in your next meal.

A whey protein drink after exercise makes you significantly less likely to scoff too much food in your next meal.

On average those who followed their workout with a shake of Volac’s whey protein went on to consume 10.3% fewer calories in their next meal than those who drank a carb-based concoction made up of dextrose, a simple sugar similar to glucose.

Carbs aren’t the enemy, but protein is better for fat loss.

The results could have major implications for people looking to lose weight yet who typically struggle to burn fat despite regular exercise and a clean diet.

This is really significant for our efforts to reduce obesity in the UK.

“This is really significant research for our efforts to reduce obesity in the UK,” says Upbeat nutritionist Sophie Enever.

“People often overcompensate with calories on days they exercise and the daily battle with hunger can lead to bad food choices that undermine efforts to lose weight. However, this study shows if you choose protein you’ve got a far better chance to beat those temptations.

“It’s a great tactic,” adds Enever. “A whey protein drink after exercise is not only good for your muscle health, but this research suggests it can play an important role in appetite suppression, helping you lose body fat while maintaining muscle mass.”

It’s just another reason — alongside the delicious taste — to grab an Upbeat after your workout.
