Statistics Show That Traditional News Sources Are Losing Ground Overall

Local TV showed resurgence with increased viewership in every key timeslot. The morning slot gained 6.3% with upticks of 3.3% and 0.1% in the evening and late night news.

This breaks pattern from a continuous decline between 2007 and 2012 with the exception of a slight increase in 2011.

An analysis of newspapers’ circulation (digital and otherwise) by John Murray of the Newspaper Association of America shows that liberalized reporting rules increased total circulation by 3% daily and 1.6% on Sundays.

Print only accounts for 71.2% of daily and 74.9% of Sunday circulation and the 15 largest newspapers have only 54.9% of total circulation in print.

In 2013, the combined median prime-time viewership of the three major news channels — CNN, Fox News and MSNBC — dropped 11% to around 3 million.

Data from Nielsen Media Research shows that MSNBC experienced the greatest decline of 24% to 619,500 with CNN down by 13% to 543,000. Fox dropped 6% to 1.75 million.

Daytime viewership remained flat with about 2 million viewers. CNN and Fox gained 12% and 2%. MSNBC lost 15.5%.
