The truncation of the artist’s journey.

The journey of the artist from novice to master is a journey through imitation and assimilation, to the moment where they set foot on the path of creation.

AI disrupts this journey in a meaningful way, but does the artist truly benefit from this disruption?

Does this lead to the creation of meaningful art?

All art making relies on materials and tools. A sculptor with a block of marble and a chisel, a painter with brushes and a canvas. The tools transform the materials into something new.

As the tools and materials change, the relationship of the artist to the subject matter changes too.

One of the most radical changes in this process was the arrival of photography. The camera’s ability to instantly capture an image wasn’t unprecedented. You could, for example, get a piece of wet clay and press it into some wood, capturing the texture and grain.

Still, photography went far beyond that.
